Casa Batlló in Barcelona: sinuous and surprising

Casa Batlló is a restored house by Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol. Built in 1877 and renovated in the years 1904-1906, it is located at 43, Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.

Originally, its name was “Casa dels Ossos” which means “house of bones”. This is certainly due to its organic appearance …

With its intertwining, irregular oval windows and the work of carved stone, this superb house is part of Art Nouveau. The creators of this building have tried to avoid any straight line!

The facade is decorated with mosaic broken in orange, golden, blue and green colors. The roof is vaulted and seems to represent the back of a dragon. It has three specific sections with a part of ceramic pieces, a multicolored central part with projecting balconies, another part in corrugated Montjuïc sandstone.

Its top is a crown and a second bulb-shaped structure with gilded ceramic pieces on a green background is inspired by contemporary constructions of basilicas.
The central part of the façade evokes the surface of a lake with water lilies, reminiscent of Monet’s Nymphéas, with gentle undulations and reflections of the sun on glass and ceramics.

Finally, above the central part of the facade, there is a small iron balcony with a slightly different aesthetic, the windows are decorated with multicolored stained glass, and the structure of the house consists of beautiful columns that simulate a frame human.
